All Steel Is Coal Fired, Hammered By Master Blacksmiths The Old Fashioned Way And Patina Finished.
At Scottsdale Art Factory, we take pride in our traditional, superior quality workmanship and craft our products from only the finest steel. Our master blacksmiths have been classically trained, and utilize old world techniques such as coal firing, anvil hammering and hand forging to create the finest handcrafted hardware available anywhere. All of our steel work is hand patina finished by heat applying iron oxides to achieve a natural patina finish that will stand the test of time.

Nothing is Drop Forged. We create works The Old Fashioned Way using solid hand forged steel, (drop forging is a poor quality, casted copy of a hand forged work of art). Nothing is wrought iron; wrought iron is simply a softer and less sturdy form of metal that cannot compare to stronger hand forged low carbon steel.

Historical Origin And Design Inspiration

The plough (American spelling: plow; both pronounced /plaʊ/) is a tool used in farming for initial cultivation of soil in preparation for sowing seed or planting. It has been a basic instrument for most of recorded history, and represents one of the major advances in agriculture. The primary purpose of ploughing is to turn over the upper layer of the soil, bringing fresh nutrients to the surface, while burying weeds and the remains of previous crops, allowing them to break down. It also aerates the soil, and allows it to hold moisture better. In modern use, a ploughed field is typically left to dry out, and is then harrowed before planting.

Ploughs were initially pulled by oxen, and later in many areas by horses. In industrialised countries, the first mechanical means of pulling a plough used steam-power (ploughing engines or steam tractors), but these were gradually superseded by internal-combustion-powered tractors. In the past two decades plough use has reduced in some areas (where soil damage and erosion are problems), in favour of shallower ploughing and other less invasive tillage techniques.

The mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) is a deer whose habitat is in the western half of North America. It gets its name from its large mule-like ears. Adult male mule deer are called bucks, adult females are called does, and young of both sexes are called fawns. Its closest relative is the black-tailed deer (considered by some a subspecies of mule deer). Unlike its dakota cousin, the white-tailed deer, mule deer are generally more associated with the land west of the Missouri River.

The most noticeable differences between whitetails and muleys are the color of their tails and configuration of their antlers. The mule deer's tail is black tipped. Mule deer antlers "fork" as they grow rather than branching from a single main beam (as with white-tails). Each year a buck's antlers start to grow in spring and are shed after mating season from mid-January to mid-April. Mule deer bucks have somewhat more prominent ears than females. Instead of running, mule deer move with a bounding leap (stotting) with all four feet coming down together.

The mule deer is the largest of the Odocoileus genus, standing, on the average, 40 to 42 inches at the shoulders and stretching 80 inches or so nose to tail. An adult buck will weigh from 150 to 300 pounds on the hoof, with does averaging 100 to 175 pounds. The occasional trophy-sized mule deer buck may weigh in around 400 pounds.[1] The Mule Deer does not show marked size variation across its range as does the White-tailed Deer.

In summer, it chiefly forages on not only herbaceous plants, but also various berries (including blackberry, huckleberry, salal, and thimbleberry). Mule deer are known to forage in summer on California Buckeye leaves, even though there is some evidence of that plant's toxicity. In winter, it forages on conifers (especially twigs of Douglas fir, cedar, Taxus yews, aspen, willow, dogwood, serviceberry, juniper, and sage). In season, it eats acorns and apples.

A Mule Deer doe grazing near the Devon Lakes. Mule deer prefer "edge" habitats where the trees meet the grass, and their populations tend to move up or down with those of their preferred foods. Mule deer rarely travel far from water or forage, and tend to bed down within easy walking distance of both. Young mule deer tend to forage together in family groups while bucks tend to travel alone or with other bucks. Most actively foraging around dawn and dusk, they tend to bed down in protected areas mid-day, but will also forage at night in more open agricultural areas, during full moons, or when pressured by hunters. Repeated beds will often be scratched level, about the size of a washtub. Temporary beds will seem little more than flattened grassy grounds.

S.A.F. hand selects only the finest, fully matured and naturally shed mule deer antlers. All wiring is internal and conforms to UL specifications. A patina will never fade, chip or crack and will only improve with age. Chandelier is UL listed and hangs from a decorative chain and ceiling canopy.

Candelabra Light Sockets Are Solid Brass - Light Sleeves: Can Be Genuine Wax, Solid Brass, Brushed Steel Or Horn End Butts The light sockets allow up to 60 watt candelabra bulbs. The external sleeve and base of each light socket is solid brass and sets on a mounted ball that can be adjusted vertically. This socket size allows for a wide choice of long life bulbs. You may also choose patina steel sleeves or antler ends. Many other sizes and styles of light bulbs and sockets are available.

The Steel Structure Keeps You Safe. For each chandelier we construct an internal frame of 3/8" to 1"diameter steel that is hand forged and hammer struck to shape. This frame strengthens the structure of the chandelier, conceals all wiring inside and also has the mounting point for the steel 900 pound test chain. You can then connect the chain directly to your solid beam or ceiling application. This allows for the weight of the antler chandelier to be on the steel frame not the unstable antler bone structure. This type of frame and hanging application also allows for the use of a (customer supplied) chandelier remote winch that allows you to remotely raise and lower your chandelier for service and maintenance.

All Antlers Offered By SAF Are Natural AA Grade, first quality and gathered from the Great Northwoods immediately after they have been naturally shed (not left through a winter or eaten by rodents then body puttied back to shape). We never use seconds, fake or faux antlers of any kind. We use antlers from the great American Northwoods region because the calcium deposits are abundant and results in higher quality more structural antlers.

All Antlers Offered By SAF Are Wired Internally And U.L. Listed. Using a steel central wire enclosure that is attached to the steel main structure we secure each antler end. We then bore through each lighted horn to run our wiring internally. All SAF lighting is hipot tested according to the rigorous rules and guide lines of Underwriters Laboratories. After passing this test they may carry a UL seal of approval. These seals are recognized by building code inspectors the world over.

Many Makers Of Antler Chandeliers Simply Use Sheet Rock Screws, glue and body putty to join the antlers together and form the chandelier. They then attach a chain to the top horn or wrap several horns with chain usually with a Home Depot chain and canopy meant for a simple lighter weight light fixture. It has been proven that this type of structure will not hold over time because as antlers age they become brittle and less structural. The consequences of this method are unpredictable and dangerous.

Many Makers Of Antler Chandeliers Simply Use Body Putty and stain to hide the wiring on top of the horns. This widely used method is less labor intensive however unsightly if looking from above. Also this method over time will usually come apart and the wires will become exposed. The consequences of this method are unpredictable and sometimes uninsurable.

Scottsdale Art Factory carries on the American Arts And Crafts Movement of the 21st century, in the same way William Morris and John Ruskin (founders of the Arts and Crafts furniture movement in circa 1800 England) inspired Gustave Stickley (founder of the American Arts and Crafts movement) in America circa 1900. Frank Loyd Wright, Charles and Henry Greene (inspired architects of the ultimate cottages such as the Gamble House in Pasadena California) are credited with raising quality standard to its highest level in their day. All of these great master craftsman also inspired the Marabella Brothers in the early 20th Century (founders of SAF circa 1913).

Every creative enterprise is always built on a foundation that was laid down by its predecessors. Creative people are also dependent on the groundwork laid down by those who came before them. H. J. Nick, artist and direct descendant of the Marbella brothers, and Scottsdale Art Factory have built on these foundations and have raised the bar of quality even higher. Thus setting a new standard and offering the finest one of a kind handmade furnishings found anywhere in the world in the 21st century.
