Pivot Hinges, which pivot in openings in the floor and the top of the door frame. Also referred to as a double-acting floor hinge. This type is found already in ancient dry stone buildings. Above photos are of old construction of hinges in the dry stone wall near Bignasco, Swiss Italian.

There Are Many Types Of Door hinges. The Main Types Include:

Butt/Mortise Hinges, usually in threes or fours, which are inset (mortised) into the door and frame. Most residential hinges found in the U.S. are made of steel, although mortise hinges for outswing doors are often made of brass or stainless steel base to prevent corrosion.

Continuous Hinges, which run the entire length of the door (also known as "Piano Hinges") Concealed Hinges used for furniture doors (with or without self-closing feature, and with or without dampening systems). They are made of 2 parts: One part is the hinge cup and the arm; the other part is the mounting plate.

Butterfly or Parliament (UK) Hinges. These were known as Dovetail hinges from the 17th century onwards and can be found on old desks and cabinets from about 1670 until the 18th century. The form of these hinges varied slightly between manufacturers, and their size ranged from the very large for heavy doors to the tiniest decorative hinge for use on jewelery caskets. Many hinges of this type were exported to America to support the home trade's limited supply. They are still found to be both fairly cheap and decorative, especially on small items.

Strap hinge - Strap hinges are an early hinge and used on many kinds of interior and exterior doors and cabinets.

H Hinges - Shaped like an H and used on flush mounted doors. Small H hinges (3" to 4") tend to be used for cabinets hinges, while larger hinges (6" to 7") are for passage doors or closet doors.

HL Hinges - Large HL hinges were common for passage doors, room doors and closet doors in the 17th, 18th and even 19th centuries. On taller doors H hinges were occasionally used in the middle along with the HL hinges.

Other types include:
Counter flap Hinge, Flush Hinge, Coach Hinge Rising Butt, Hinge Double action spring hinge, Tee Hinge, Friction Hinge, Security Hinge, Cranked or 'Stormproof' Hinge, Lift-off Hinges, Self closing Hinges, Butt Hinge

Other Hinges:

Butler Tray Hinge - Fold to 90 degrees and also snap flat. They are for tables that have a tray top for serving.

Card Table Hinge - Mortised into edge of antique or reproduction card tables and allow the top to fold onto itself.

Drop Leaf Table Hinge - Mounted under the surface of a table with leaves that drop down.

Since at least medieval times there have been hinges to drawbridges for defensive purposes for fortified buildings. Hinges are used in contemporary architecture where building settlement can be expected over the life of the building. For example, the Dakin Building, Brisbane, California was designed with its entrance ramp on a large hinge to allow settlement of the building built on piles over bay mud. This device has been effective.

Shown Here: Portal Speak Easy Hand Carved
This portal door is hand cut directly out of your 3" or 4" thick solid door slab, ensuring perfect grain matching and a tight fit. There are no glued up sections on this portal door. It is as you see it hand carved from the solid door blade. the carved areas were left thicker when this door was joined up to make the door slab or blade. Then our master carvers removed this material with chisel and expertise to create this relief. No parts of this door are glued on with the exception of the internal shelf. However this shelf is pegged and doweled and tenon joined in to the solid structure of this door. This is a good example of the difference between true investment quality and semi- production doors or full production doors. This door will stand the test of time.

Shown Here: Mortis Lock Heavy Duty
SAF has this special heavy duty mortis lock produced by one of the worlds top lock manufacturers especially for our extra thick solid wood doors. This style of lock requires a large grooved pocket to allow for the steel lock mechanism to fit inside the door edge. Also the face mount plats and bolt slide is larger than that of a simple dead bolt. This mortis lock is built with the ability to fit doors that are 1"thick up to 8" thick with out special adapters or breech in strength. This tungsten steel heavy duty bolt lock allows for additional strength and security. This mortis lock along with this 3"- 8" thick solid long grain timber door edge is the best entrance door security available and security.

Most door manufacturers design with two primary things in mind. Cutting their cost and how well each piece will fit in the shipping box
so you or your builder can assemble your new door on site. In order to cut cost they choose door thickness that are known in this industry as production standard. These door thickness are mostly under 2 1/4" thick and rarely solid structural timber. Most are veneers with so called engineered cores. This practice is again predicated on cost, not your security or longevity. This is usually done so a cheap production lock from your local super lumber depot can be used. This has proven to never the best for you and your families home security.

<< Shown Here: 3" Inch Thick Door Edge With Dead Bolt Lock Installed
SAF has this special heavy duty dead bolt is lock produced by one of the worlds top lock manufacturers specifically for our extra thick solid wood doors. This dead bolt lock is built with the ability to fit doors that are 1"thick up to 8" thick with out special adapters or breech in strength. The bolt slide is larger than that of a simple production dead bolt. This tungsten steel dead long bolt lock allows for additional strength and security . This dead bolt lock along with this 3" thick solid long grain timber door edge is the best entrance door security available.

The photos shown in this section are designed to help you understand each piece of necessary hardware and its function in relation to its design elements.

<< Shown Here: 3" Inch Thick Door Edge Upper And Lower Adjustable Tension Roller Style Door Latch:
SAF has this special heavy duty adjustable pressure roller closers produced by one of the worlds top manufacturers specifically for our solid wood doors. These rollers are built with the ability to fit doors that are 1"thick up to 8" thick with out special adapters or breech in strength of hold. Each door depending upon height and weight must have one or more pressure adjustable closer and strike plate. This allows the door to click shut and hold when the dead bolt lock is not set in the locked position.

Shown Here: Adjustable Tension Roller
on a close up photo of a raised grain finished 3" inch thick door edge. The roller is mortised in to the door edge and sealed. This allows it to be flush mounted and protected inside it own mortised pocket and is sealed from the elements. Shown: there are two mounting screws and two pressure adjustment screws

<left></left>

Shown Here Below: Close Up Photo Of Adjustable Tension Roller And Jamb Mounted Accepter
The roller is mortised in to the door edge as was shown above. This jamb mounted strike plate is designed to be mortised in to the jamb side directly in line with the door mounted roller to accept the roller when door is closed. The ramp allows for a easy close of the door. The steel indentation accepts and seats the roller.

The exact position of this steel strike plate determines the tightness of how much pressure the door blade is allowed to press against the door seals. The more pressure you set on the springs the harder it is to pull the door open. This seat also keeps the door set to its weather seals against the rabbeted stop. Once adjusted properly this insures a perfect seal against the elements every time. One of the best ways to go green and save energy.

Shown Here: Shown Here: Roller Catch illustration
It is adjustable to allow for the amount of force needed to be applied when pulling or pushing this door open or shut. This usually would be adjusted according to weather conditions in your area shuch as wind pressure or if you wished a particular amount of force needed to be applied to allow comfortable use of your door. This type of locking system will never lock you out with out your key.

1" Inch Deep Rabbeted Stop
As shown here this type of stop is rabbeted by grooving or cutting a dado or kerf cut from the solid piece of 4"thick X 8"deep timber stock the door jamb or casing is made from. This method of building a door stop will guarantee that the structure of the door stop will never change over time and ensures a perfect seat for the door seals.

Most Door Manufacturers Design With Two Primary Things In Mind:

Keeping Their Profits High And How Well Each Piece Will Fit In The Shipping Box.

To many manufacturers pre-hung can mean that you or your builder will assemble your new door on site. Most hardware is shipped some assembly required. Also, with many manufacturers, in order to further cut labor cost they choose to use straight cut lumber and create this stop by simply stacking one board on top of another board and glueing, stapling, or nailing them together to form the door stop. As your door is opened and closed it bangs or hammers against this stop until it moves and allows the seals to leak. This method of creating a door stop has proven to be ineffective over time.
